In Case of a Storm
- There is no need to ever lower the water except in special cases.
- Turn off all electrical power to the swimming pool (pump motor, lighting, chlorinators, etc.).
- If your filter pump is in an unsheltered area, have the motor removed and stored or wrap it with a waterproof membrane or plastic bag and tie it securely in place to prevent sand and driving water from entering the motor.
- Tie down the pump box lid, if present.
- Remove all loose items from the pool.
- Add extra chlorine to pool to prevent contamination. The pool provides a handy source of water for washing or flushing toilets if your house water supply fails.
- Remove and store any removable child safety fences. Install the fence deck caps.
Prevention of Staining
In order to prevent staining of the interior pool walls, a metal chelation product can be used. The product aids in the removal of metals introduced to the pool by rain, fill waters, and corrosion of metal equipment. Failure to use a metal chelation product as mentioned in accordance with manufacturer’s instructions may result in stained pool walls, which are not covered by your pool warranty.
Common Factors Affecting the In-Pool Longevity of Chlorine
- WATER INTENSITY – The warmer the pool’s water, the shorter the life of chlorine.
- This process is greatly accomplished when the water temperature exceeds 35 degrees.
- SUNLIGHT – The greater the sun’s intensity, the quicker the dissipation of disinfectant “residual” unless the pool is stabilized.
- SWIMMERS – The greater the number of swimmers, the more disinfectant is used up.
- WIND AND RAIN – Dust, bacteria, algae spores and other debris in the pool overworks the chemical disinfectants and reduces their ability to sanitize. To maintain your pool’s bacteria-killing residual, disinfectant chemicals may be added by hand or by a chemical feeder. Feeders may be adjusted to increase or decrease the feed rates of disinfectants depending upon the chemical demand of your particular pool.
